Love Wine? Become a Sommelier

Answer these questions to see if you are really cut out to be a Sommelier.

1. Do you enjoy being around people and actually thrive at it? A good Sommelier should definitely be a “people person” in my opinion. Does this sound like something you can do or do you shy away from the public?

2. Does matching up customers with different types of wine interest you? It is also important to have the perfect wine alongside the food.

3. Do you think you would be able to oversee a wine cellar in classy restaurants making sure it is stocked properly and keep a good inventory?

4. Would you enjoy working along Chefs and all the pressure that running a restaurant entails? Some serve as a Wine Consultant for restaurants. There is much responsibility but the rewards are well worth the work.

5. Do you have a good memory? You would be expected to have names of wines, beers and different types of spirits along with the restaurant’s menu at the “tip of your tongue”. You would also be expected to know your wines — lower-cost ones and higher-priced vintages.

6. Would you enjoy traveling and competing with other Sommeliers around the world? Part of your job description would also be to visit vineyards and wineries wherever your particular Sommelier job would take you to.

7. Do you consider yourself a morning or night person? Being a “night person” definitely would be an asset because being a Sommelier involves helping others with wine with dinner.

8. Are you willing to focus on education and becoming certified to eventually becoming a Professional Sommelier? “Slacking off” is not an option. Professional Sommeliers are passionate about what they do. Are you passionate about wine?

If you answered yes to most of the questions above, you may want to consider a Sommelier course. There are sophisticated wine courses offering Sommelier training.
